Phonics Word List Samples

 

Except for the "Syllable Division Practice" word lists, these are samples from the lists available from the new edition of Drill Bits binder. These can be especially useful If youwork with these six kinds of syllables in programs such as Orton-Gillingham programs.

 

Consonants, Blends, and Digraphs

1. Consonants, initial blends(chart or list) and final blends (chart or list)
2. "soft" C

Closed Syllable List Samples

1. Short A real words
2. Short I
   1. c/g (s/j sound) practice, vocabulary enrichment, mixed a/i syllables
3. Short U
   1. nonsense syllables and "ul" syllables
   2. multisyllable words with a, i, o, and u
4. Short E : Multisyllable words with a, i, o, u, and e
• Closed syllables with "y"
  1. Words with y as a short vowel

Vowel-Consonant-E syllable

1. Introduction: closed syllables compared to silent e syllables
2. syllables - mix - an excellent drill set of vce syllables

Open Syllables

1. Nonsense - all vowels

R-Controlled Syllables

1. Multisyllable OR words
2. IR words
3. vowel-r-e pattern practice ('stared' vs. 'started')
   

Consonant-L-E syllables

Syllable Division Rules

1. Rule one - VC/CV (all closed syllables)
2. Rule 2a -- V/CV
3. Rule 2a and Rule 1 Review: v/cv and vc/cv (presentation of contrast between the two)
4. Rule 3 -- V/V

Category lists

1. wa- words
2. -ity words
3. -ous words
4. i-ous words (dubious, obvious, etc)
5. Y at the end of a word -- not an exception, but often good to teach separately if a student spells these words with "e"
6. ch /k/ words
7. ea with short e sound (bread)
8. ea with other sounds : long a sound (steak), eau
9. er with "air" sound (very, cemetery)
10. -ive words (give, captive)
11. -ance words (distance, admittance)
    

Syllable Division Practice -- Assorted Multisyllable Words

1. List 1 - assorted words from Catherine Called Birdy (all syllable types, various "special categories")
2. List 2 first five syllable types, & some special categories (-tion, -al, etc); no vowel digraphs
3. List 3 Focus on v/cv and vc/cv
4. List 4 Focus on v/cv and vc/cv - some one-syllable (e.g. "robbed")
5. List 5 Focus on scared vs. scarred and -ation words
6. List 6 hard decoding, medium vocabulary
7. List 7 hard decoding, hard vocabulary
8. List 8 hard decoding, hard vocabulary
