Here's the option I hadn't picked
before - bearing right when the horrible gravel turns into
"regular" gravel - still not exactly fun,
still something you're going to have to be wary and slow
through, but predictable size, at least. (Duly note:
no, this isn't
a "fair to good" surface - it's "passable." If the
previous gravel was like actually fording a stream in your
car in the middle
of the mountains, this is like a well-graded ford... still
not something you do unless you have to.)
