To separate into parts, or to cause (people) to disagree strongly

 

 

Example One:  

This class will be divided into groups  to complete this assignment.  

 

 

Example Two:

 

"Divide and rule" is a way a person in power stays in power by having other people  disagree with each other instead of him.
