Special Category: a with short o sound

These are examples of where a sounds like short o. Many of these words are quite common. See if the student can figure out a pattern here... and why *all* the words fit that pattern, not just the ones where you can see the "w".

This is a good category to include early in reading -- even if a student doesn't miss some of these common words. The student should be able to explain to you why this is a "special category." Because most of the words are very familiar, it's easier for the student to put in the cognitive energy to seeing patterns and understanding the concept of "special categories."

The student should use a pencil to underline as s/he reads each word, and split the two-syllable words. When the student has read the entire list without error, fluently, put the day's date on it. When there are five dates, the list can be skipped -- but periodically included in drill (every week or three), and if it's not quick and easy, put back on the daily regimen.
