Where I post assorted thoughts and links relating to learning, specifically learning difficulties, learning disabilities, dyslexia, dysgraphia, "dyscalculia" and all the other reasons people struggle with numbers and math and arithmetic, reading, Orton-Gillingham stuff and ... whatever!

more metaphors

I've sometimes analogized sitting in class and following along with the teacher, understanding 'completely,' and even doing homework assignments... with the notebook next to you, or checking the asnwers... with singing along with the radio. You think you really know that ditty... but then test time comes, and it's like sticking you on the stage with the mic and saying 'let her rip.'

Today's version: "I can watch Albert Pujols hit the ball and say, 'I can do that!' but it's going to be a heap o' trouble."

ONe teacher, in honor of hte first premise, gave his students a mock test. Afterwards he had more folks in his study sessions than ever before. Surprise (not ;)) performance was better on the real test.
This is a slower-paced course... sometimes it's not the math that needs to be paced differently, but other aspects of the learning process, such as "how do you know you know it?"
